Description

“Death of a Bookseller” by Alice Slater thrusts readers into a gripping and chilling debut novel that explores the sinister depths of obsession and the darkness that lurks within the human psyche. Dubbed an instant Sunday Times bestseller and one of the standout debuts of 2023, this electrifying tale is a masterclass in psychological suspense.

Meet Roach—a bookseller, loner, and devout follower of all things true crime. With her only companions being her beloved serial killer books, murder podcasts, and her pet snail, Bleep, Roach is content in her solitary existence, devoid of any desire for human connection. That is until Laura steps into the bookshop. With her charming demeanor and adorable literary tote bags, Laura quickly becomes the darling of the bookstore. Yet, beneath Laura’s sunny exterior, Roach detects a darkness that mirrors her own.

As curiosity morphs into a morbid obsession, Roach becomes determined to embed herself in Laura’s story, regardless of Laura’s consent. What ensues is a spine-tingling journey into the depths of obsession and the murky realm where darkness and light intertwine.

With accolades from esteemed authors and critics alike, including Caroline Kepnes, Erin Kelly, and Abigail Dean, “Death of a Bookseller” captivates with its confident and sassy narrative, leaving readers spellbound until the final page. Slater’s razor-sharp prose pulls readers into a web of tension and intrigue, where every twist and turn leaves them breathless and eager for more.

Described as a “spectacularly creepy debut” by The Guardian and hailed as “relentlessly creepy and deeply compulsive” by Heather Darwent, this debut novel is a must-read for fans of dark and twisty thrillers. “Death of a Bookseller” is an unforgettable journey into the shadows of the human psyche—an atmospheric and deliciously dark tale that will haunt readers long after they turn the final page.

Review

Into paperback at last, this chilling debut thriller from Alice Slater. Scariest book I’ve read in a while, it left me with goosebumps. Roach has a true crime obsession and a weird lonely life, Laura couldn’t be more opposite with her cheery smile and matching pumps and hats, they work in the same bookshop. But Laura has a dark secret and Roach quickly becomes obsessed with her. The bookshop backdrop was satisfyingly accurate I thought (others may disagree) but if you’ve ever wanted to work in a bookshop (surely??) you’ll love the interesting details.
